The Monroe Kimbrel Gardens were dedicated April 21, 2001, in honor of the late Monroe Kimbrel, vice president of the Watson-Brown Foundation from 1970 until his death in 1999.
The gardens, sprawled over four acres, offer environmental educational opportunities for area students. Outdoor classroom areas flank the ponds and wetlands for class instruction; a continuous pathway surrounds the entire gardens and a gazebo provides shelter and a stunning vista over the three ponds. The main pavilion houses a grill and barbeque pit. Walks and restroom facilities are handicap accessible.
The ecosystems created by the gardens are consistent with those in the Piedmont. Plant materials are either native or naturalized Georgia species. Largemouth bass, catfish and a variety of bream cruise the ponds. Reptiles, amphibians and small mammals are abundant.
The Monroe Kimbrel Gardens are available, free of charge, by making reservations by phone.
